I find myself pushed by the Holy Spirit to share some thoughts I have kept inside for some time now, during the Renew My Church process. It’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room in any discussion of what’s going on in the Catholic world today. First and foremost, that elephant takes the shape of some mighty bad scandals within the ranks of priests and bishops. Our Lord alone knows what such problems these “sins” have brought upon our parishes, schools and Catholic organizations. It cannot be stressed enough how we all must pray for priests and bishops today. And in this vain, it is so important for everyone to examine their own consciences. Because true renewal must be a renewal of our faith. We cannot accept the narrative that declares that the present difficulties of our church are simply natural occurrences like the changing of the seasons. Nor can we cry out and point the blame solely at the hierarchy. To this end, take a deep breath and contemplate the following 12 questions. If you’re still standing when you’re done, then role up your sleeves, and pitch in to help renew the Church that Jesus established.
How many Catholics believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist?
How many Catholics confess regularly?
How many Catholics have “converted” to a Protestant denomination?
How many Catholics regularly vote for pro-choice politicians?
